5 Female-Directed Films We Love
In the lead-up to our next Popcorn, Please. we’re spotlighting some of our favourite films directed by women. These aren’t just good movies, they’re Please movies. Sexy, subtle, a little sad, beautifully styled, and full of moments that linger.
All certified fresh and juicy with all A’s on Rotten Tomatoes. Because good taste is a turn-on.
1. Lady Bird (2017) – dir. Greta Gerwig | 99%
The coming-of-age film that made us all text our moms and cry in the shower. Greta Gerwig’s semi-autobiographical debut is messy, tender, and full of teen longing — the real kind.
2. Shiva Baby (2020) – dir. Emma Seligman | 97%
Ever been stuck in a room with your sugar daddy, your ex-girlfriend, and your parents? Now imagine that’s a funeral. Emma Seligman’s debut is a sweaty, brilliant comedy of discomfort with just the right amount of bisexual chaos.
3. Hustlers (2019) – dir. Lorene Scafaria | 87%
Okay, this one’s technically just under 90%, but we’re letting it through on a technicality (and because J.Lo on a pole is cinema). Strippers scamming Wall Street bros? Feminism.
4. Lost in Translation (2003) – dir. Sofia Coppola | 95%
A soft-focus meditation on loneliness, connection, and the things we don’t say. Sofia Coppola nails the ache of a fleeting bond — and makes jet lag look devastatingly chic.
5. Queen & Slim (2019) – dir. Melina Matsoukas | 90%
A first date turned into a manhunt. This stunning road movie blends romance, politics, and slow-burning tension with style. The fashion? Impeccable. The chemistry? Electric. The ending? Gutting.
There you have it! Hopefully some of these films feel fresh, and we’ve given you something to look forward to watching on these cold winter evenings. And we hope you’ll join us for our next screening. Bring a lover, a friend, or just yourself. Popcorn? Sorted. Next screening? Next Wednesday. Tickets? Free (but limited). So book now.
More on Popcorn, Please. We started hosting these movie nights as a love letter to films that make us feel seen. Films about connection, while allowing us to connect with you, our Please family.
