· By Team PLEASE
This Pride Month, we’ve teamed up with Cape Town based illustrator Eduan Naude to celebrate queer joy, sensuality, and expression through art. Known for his bold and playful illustrations and design work, Eduan’s work finds the fun in the mundane and draws inspiration from nature, memories and everyday absurdities, bringing this collaboration to life in all the right ways. Together, we’re celebrating pleasure in a loud and proud way.
Q 1. What does Pride mean to you—both personally and as a visual artist?
Pride means to be unconditional and free in your expression of yourself.
Q2. How did you approach this collaboration with Please, and what story are you hoping the artwork tells?
A story of humanity, the single thread that unites us and ties us forever together. Behind all ambiguity lurks humanity.
Q3. What role do you think art plays in queer visibility and liberation, especially in South Africa?
So many of our institutions are unable or unwilling to hear the plight of the marginalised queer community and would much rather turn a blind eye, art will play an integral part in casting a light on our failings in society and will serve as a reminder that to be able to express unconditionally, is a right to all. Our art and expression is the weapon to make real change and spread awareness.
